A 66-year-old Miramar woman has been arrested in a fatal hit-and-run, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

The accident happened just before 7 a.m. on Monday, March 23, in West Park near Barry Road and West Hallandale Beach Boulevard, and a pedestrian was killed, officials say.

Karen Essick was driving a maroon Toyota Corolla when the fatal crash occurred, police say. Detectives say surveillance video shows her returning to the accident scene, then fleeing shortly after.

The pedestrian, Mishell Warner, was pronounced dead at Memorial Regional Hospital on Monday. Detectives say she was not in a designated crosswalk when she was struck.

Essick was arrested on Wednesday after detectives say they found her car in a repair shop. She is charged with tampering with or fabricating physical evidence and failure to remain on scene in an accident involving death.

Essick was transported to the Broward County Main Jail after admitting that she was in an accident involving a pedestrian, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.
