If you live in Miramar and own a car made by this company: Beware of thieves
Miramar police are issuing an “urgent public alert” on social media warning Kia owners in the city to take precautions as break-ins and thefts targeting the vehicles have surged.
Police say the increase involves specific Kia models and years. The thefts are happening primarily overnight in residential neighborhoods and parking lots, with suspects using similar methods to break into or steal the vehicles.
The warning comes as law enforcement agencies across the country have reported similar trends in recent years involving Kia and Hyundai vehicles, with thieves using widely shared techniques on social media to bypass security systems.
According to national reports, the vehicles are being targeted as part of an illegal social media trend, dubbed the “Kia Challenge,” in which thieves use a screwdriver and USB cable to steal the cars. Hyundai models are also targeted.
It appears the trend has reached Miramar.
The police department is encouraging Miramar residents to take immediate steps to protect their Kias. Models include the Soul, Sorento and Telluride.
Among the recommendations:
- Use a steering wheel lock — even if the vehicle is equipped with an immobilizer — as it can act as a strong visual deterrent to thieves.
- Always lock your doors and windows, even if leaving the vehicle unattended for a short time.
- Avoid leaving valuables such as purses, bags or electronics in plain view.
- Park in well-lit areas or inside a garage, when possible.
Miramar police say staying alert and taking basic precautions can make a significant difference in preventing theft of your Kia.
Authorities are asking anyone who sees suspicious activity to report it by calling 911 or the department’s non-emergency number at 954-602-4000.
