An opportunity to get a free fruit tree in Miramar has sold out well before the event date.

The giveaway, hosted by Broward County Commissioner Alexandra P. Davis at Miramar Pineland Park, is set for Saturday, April 18, and it quickly reached capacity.

Those fortunate enough to have reserved a spot could receive one of five varieties of tree: Banana, mango, papaya, soursop or Jamaican Caper.

Soursop, or guanabana, is a large, sweet fruit with a green skin. The flavor is compared to a combination of mango and pineapple. Some fruits can weigh up to 10 pounds.

Jamaican Caper is an evergreen shrub with flowers that is native to Florida, withstanding drought and hurricane winds. It can grow from six to 20 feet tall.

From NatureScape trees, the plants are small enough to fit in a car trunk. Interested gardeners were encouraged to reserve a spot, but trees are limited and available while supplies last.
