New and free pickleball courts in Miramar may finally be moving from conversation to concrete.

Last week, the City of Miramar officially opened bids to launch its Sunset Lakes Community Center pickleball court project.

The project calls for the construction of two outdoor asphalt pickleball courts at the community center, located at 2801 SW 186th Ave.

The center currently has two indoor pickleball courts in its gymnasium.

Interested contractors must submit sealed bids covering everything from materials and equipment to supervision and final completion of the courts.

The deadline for contractors is May 21. Once a bid is accepted by the Parks Department and approved by the City Commission, construction should begin soon afterward.

The number of public pickleball courts in the city is limited. Currently, players in Miramar have four dedicated outdoor pickleball courts at the Miramar/SilverLakes Tennis Complex.

The Ansin Sport Complex also offers pickleball, as does the Vernon E. Hargray Youth Enrichment Center, according to the city’s informational page about pickleball.

Pickleball’s popularity has surged in recent years, and this move comes in response to requests from residents for more courts across the city.
