Woman accused of causing fatal drunk crash in Miramar arrested 13 years later
A woman was arrested at Miami International Airport in connection with a 2013 crash in Miramar that resulted in a man’s death, according to arrest records.
Texas resident Nazia Badal, 44, was taken into custody April 30 when U.S. Marshals noticed she had an active arrest warrant for DUI manslaughter.
On June 16, 2013, Badal, then 32, was driving a Dodge Charger down Red Road at about 60 mph in a 45 mph zone when she collided with a Honda Civic, Miramar police wrote in an arrest affidavit.
Officers responded to the crash just after midnight on June 17. The driver of the Honda Civic, Jose Francisco Zamora, died at the scene due to multiple blunt force injuries.
A witness described Zamora’s car as “mangled metal,” saying the crash looked like an explosion. He told police the Civic crossed in front of the Charger, which had been flashing its lights at slower traffic.
Badal’s final toxicology report showed her blood alcohol was nearly twice the legal limit.
The officer at the scene said Badal seemed “oblivious” to how serious the crash was and showed little concern for the other driver.
The arrest report says that after the officer made her aware of the criminal investigation, she allegedly said, “For what, nobody died,” and, “Who’s gonna pay for my car?”
She told police she had just gotten off work and was driving to see her boyfriend in Pembroke Pines, according to the affidavit.
Though court records show she was arrested in 2014 and posted bond, she failed to appear in court in 2017.
She is currently being held at the Paul Rein Detention Facility.
Badal is originally from Trinidad and Tobago and is also subject to an immigration hold with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
