The City of Miramar is asking residents to help identify fallen hometown service members for its 2026 Memorial Day ceremony while also launching a new initiative to honor living veterans with commemorative street pole banners across the city.

Twenty veterans will be selected to be featured on street pole banners that will be displayed throughout the city this year.

City officials are asking residents to submit the names of family members and loved ones who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces for a Memorial Day tribute, and to submit current service members and living veterans for the second project.

“We know we have many veterans who lived in our city, and we want to make sure we honor them during our city’s Memorial Day ceremonies,” Miramar Mayor Wayne M. Messam announced at Wednesday’s City Commission meeting.

The local observance will be on May 25 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Miramar Regional Park 9/11 & Veterans Memorial, 16801 Miramar Parkway.

The veterans could have served during World War I or II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Gulf War or any other major conflict.

To be considered for the tribute, submissions must include the service member’s name, branch of service and an official uniform portrait.

The city says the effort is part of its commitment to honoring the lives and legacies of Miramar residents who served the country with courage and dedication.

Residents can register their loved ones online through the city’s submission form here.

In addition to honoring fallen service members during its Memorial Day observance, the City of Miramar is also launching a separate initiative recognizing living veterans through a new street banner program.

According to the city, applicants must be current Miramar residents and either active-duty service members or honorably discharged veterans.

Participants are required to submit an official military portrait showing the head, neck and shoulders, along with their name, military title and years of service.

Space is limited and selections will be made in order of submission.

The application deadline is May 15. Residents can apply through the city’s online registration form.
