Miramar Fire Rescue hiring amid growing statewide firefighter and EMT shortage
Miramar Fire Rescue is seeking new applicants for firefighter and emergency medical service positions as part of a new recruitment campaign announced this week.
The agency is recruiting candidates for both Firefighter/EMT and Firefighter/Paramedic positions.
Officials say the recruitment effort is aimed at strengthening emergency response services and expanding staffing levels within the city’s fire rescue division during a statewide shortage of fire rescue department employees.
Statewide, there is a concerning number of vacancies in EMT jobs, according to the Orlando Sentinel. To blame is the rising demand driven by population growth, increased emergency calls and retirements, industry professionals say. Barry University is working to counter the issue with a training program of its own, while University of South Florida has conducted a study on what the shortage will mean for the state.
Departments like Miramar’s are combating the issue as well with heightened recruitment, adopting new technology and utilizing increased state funding for training and equipment.
In Miramar, the department is offering starting salaries ranging from approximately $56,856 for Firefighter/EMT positions to more than $62,542 for Firefighter/Paramedic roles.
According to the city’s recruitment flyer, benefits include paid vacation time, 12 paid holidays, tuition reimbursement, education incentives, a competitive retirement pension and an 8% shift differential.
Applicants selected for the positions will work a schedule of 24 hours on-duty followed by 48 hours off-duty.
To qualify, candidates must have a high school diploma or GED, a current State of Florida Firefighter Certificate of Compliance, a valid Florida driver’s license, current BLS and/or ACLS certification and a current Florida EMT certification.
Miramar’s online application deadline is May 15. Click here to apply.
