Miramar seeks to shift $600K from delayed projects to active work. Why the delays?

Under the proposal, money from other projects would be moved to complete the renovation of city commission chambers and other projects already underway.

Miramar commissioners will be asked to approve a budget amendment that would shift nearly $600,000 away from several delayed capital improvement projects and into others that are moving forward, including the renovation of the City Commission chambers.

City officials describe the proposal as a routine financial management measure designed to ensure available funds are spent before the expenditure deadlines associated with the city’s 2020 and 2022 Capital Improvement Program loan funds.

The city would transfer the money to projects where work is underway and progressing more quickly, according to City Manager Roy Virgin.

No exclamation was given as to why some projects have fallen behind schedule. However, city officials said the projects are not being canceled.

Instead, they will be carried forward into future fiscal years, providing additional time for their completion.

The proposed transfers include:

  • $418,559 from the Town Center Information Signage project to the City Commission Chambers renovation project, the largest reallocation.
  • $116,559 from the Miramar Regional Park Aquatics Complex Renovations project to the County Line Road Rehabilitation project.
  • $19,493 from the Street Construction and Resurfacing to various improvement project to the Pembroke Road extension from SW 160th Avenue to Miramar Parkway.
  • $7,645 from the Miramar Regional Park Aquatics Complex Renovations project to the County Line Road Rehabilitation project.
  • $23,200 from the Amphitheater Noise Reduction project to the Town Center Colonnade project.
  • $4,161 from the Street Construction and Resurfacing project to the Pembroke Road extension from SW 160th Avenue to Miramar Parkway.

Commissioners are expected to consider the ordinance on first reading on Wednesday, June 3. A second reading and final vote will be required before the budget changes take effect.
