Concerts, comedians and cultural festivals: Weekend happenings in Miramar
Miramar has many events this weekend and there’s still time to buy tickets or take part in something that’s free.
Friday night has a concert at the Miramar Cultural Center for those into gospel music, and Sunday is the highly anticipated Grace Jamaican Jerk Festival.
Here are some of the events happening in Miramar from Friday, Nov. 7, through Sunday, Nov. 9:
Friday
Sneakers on the Ground — 6 to 8 p.m.
This dancing event is back for its November installment. Instead of boots on the ground line dancing, instructor Jammin’ Jamei will teach a group of dancers with sneakers on in the Vernon E. Hargray gym. Get ready for high-energy fitness and fun for all ages, free of charge for Miramar residents.
First Fridays: Network and Chill — 6:30 to 9 p.m.
Comedian Pretty Vee will join Miramar Mayor Wayne M. Messam at this monthly networking series. This month it will be hosted at World of Beer Bar and Kitchen, featuring food, a talk from the celebrity guest, and networking opportunities geared toward Millenials and Gen Z.
Tamela Mann with VaShawn Mitchell — 8 p.m.
Experience gospel icon Tamela Mann, singer of “Take Me to the King” at the Miramar Cultural Center. With guest VaShawn Mitchell, known for “Nobody Greater,” Mann will bring a night of praise and worship and gospel hits. Tickets are available from $85 to $112.
Celebrating Panama’s Independence with Caribbean Soul and Latin Pride
November is Panama’s month to celebrate, and Vice Mayor Yvette Colbourne is hosting a two-night event to commemorate it. One ticket gives access to the sip and paint on Friday and the gala on Saturday. Proceeds will go to the SOFLO Panamanian Association’s initiatives for veterans, elementary schools, senior adults and individuals with disabilities, as well as a scholarship fund.
Low Impact Aerobics at Vernon E. Hargray Youth Enrichment Center — 9 a.m.
This free health and wellness activity takes place at the Vernon E. Hargray Center every Friday. Hosted by Vice Mayor Yvette Colbourne, these low impact exercises cause less pressure on joints by involving gentler contact with the ground. Movements have less jumping but still get your heart rate up.
Holiday Project Giftwrapping — 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Florida Cares needs volunteers to help wrap gifts for their holiday project. Florida Cares is a nonprofit dedicated to improving the lives of incarcerated individuals. The gifts go to children of incarcerated parents to make their holiday season easier.
Saturday
Mayor’s Chess Challenge — 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
The mayor’s Chess Challenge is open to chess players of all skill levels. The Miramar Chess Club joins this event at the Sunset Lakes Community Center to encourage any strategists to join in on the fun.
Camp Embark Winter Camp Open House — 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
If you’re looking to send your kids to winter camp, this one has an open house for the whole family to see if Camp Embark is a good fit. At Miramar Country Club Ranches, enjoy sample activities, winter-themed science experiments, creative projects, and hands-on challenges.
