This week in Miramar: Salsa, yoga, food giveaways, kids book reading & more
Miramar has events stacked for each day of the week, including a special reading and giveaway at the library.
Plus, salsa classes are happening at a studio on Red Road and Zumba classes are back.
Here are some of the events happening in Miramar from Monday, Feb. 23, through Thursday, Feb. 26:
Monday
Emergency food pantry — 2 to 5 p.m. (Monday to Friday)
The emergency food pantry is open from weekdays at the Alexandra P. Davis Multi-Service Complex. Hosted by Vice Mayor Yvette Colbourne, this food pantry could include canned goods. Call 954-889-2719 to schedule an appointment.
Commission meeting — 7 p.m.
Though these meetings are usually held on the first and third Wednesday of the month, this one will be held on a Monday. These meetings are open to the public, and commissioners discuss legislation and changes with Miramar residents. Make public comment in person or watch online on the city’s website.
Monday Flow @ The Rooftop with Kat — 8 to 9 p.m.
This is a free yoga class on the rooftop of the parking garage at Epic Residences. The instructor asks that you bring a mat, water and towel and park your car on the rooftop. This class is weather dependent.
Tuesday
Celebrate Read for the Record Day — 10:30 to 11 a.m.
Kids can enjoy an interactive reading at the Miramar Branch Library of “See Marcus Grow” by Marcus Bridgewater, otherwise known as social media influencer Garden Marcus. Kids will receive their own copy of the book after the reading, and the theme is how the growth of a plant mirrors a child’s growth.
Salsa classes — 7 to 10 p.m.
Salsa Kings is offering the first class free when you sign up at welcome.salsakings.com. This is an energetic class made for beginners and experienced salsa dancers, where instructors guide you through the moves. Salsa King members get the first class free, two online courses free, and access to the community. This class is also available on Thursdays.
Zumba on the Plaza — 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Instructor Gabriela Jurado is back with another Tuesday class at Town Center Plaza. Join this outdoor class with a group of dancers from all levels. Bring water, since Zumba is a class meant to make you sweat.
Wednesday
Walk-Up food distribution — 12 to 2 p.m.
The city is partnering with organizations such as Goodman Jewish Family Services and Farm Share for this free food distribution. Farm Share works across the state collecting donations from farms, grocery stores, restaurants and similar businesses. With Farm Share donations, you can usually expect shelf-stable canned goods, dry pasta or rice, beef, chicken or pork and vegetables. This event may end when all food is distributed at the Alexandra P. Davis Multi-Service Complex. No registration is required.
Historic Miramar advisory board meeting — 6:30 p.m.
Historic Miramar has an advisory board that reports to the commission its findings about the neighborhoods east of I-75. Development projects in eastern Miramar as well as improvements that need to be made are usually discussed. Attend in person at the Alexandra P. Davis Multi-Service Complex or online at Miramarevents.webex.com.
Miramar Chess Club — 7 p.m.
The Miramar Chess Club welcomes all who are interested in the game of strategy. Join chess enthusiasts at the Starbucks on Red Road for games until 10 p.m. The club asks that you bring your own chess set, but says on Facebook that players of all levels are welcome.
Wine Down Wednesday Miramar business social — 7 to 8:30 p.m.
Join locals for a business social at Sushi Sake, sponsored by LegalShield. For an entry free of $7.68, you can meet other entrepreneurs, professionals and business owners, and make connections that could elevate your business. Plus, a presentation from LegalShield on how to protect your professional work.
Thursday
Free Zumba Thursdays — 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
This is the last class of the month and the last one celebrating Black History Month. Join instructor Gabriela Jurado for a Zumba class at the Sunset Lakes Community Center. that has moves for all levels of dancers. For this exercise class, you are encouraged to wear red, green, yellow and black to celebrate Black History Month.
