This weekend in Miramar: Afro-Carib Fest, Florida Follies, kids painting & more

If you’re ready to party, Miramar has a weekend set up with fun in mind.

The final weekend of Black History Month and Reggae Month events includes a music festival and two other concerts. Plus, multiple free yoga classes and a sip-and-paint for kids.

Here’s what’s happening in Miramar from Friday, Feb. 27, through Sunday, March 1:

Friday

Low Impact Aerobics — 9 a.m.

The Vernon E. Hargray Youth Enrichment Center offers a free aerobics class. These moves are taught by an instructor meant to get your heart rate up without putting stress on your joints, but implementing low-impact moves. Participants of all fitness levels are welcome to join.

Selecta Showdown — 7 to 11 p.m.

Miramar will honor Dancehall legend Wayne Wonder at this DJ competition at Shirley Branca Park. Three women DJs will compete for the title of best DJ and a $1,000 prize: DJ Lady Terra, DJ Rere and DJ Shawty Redz. There will be food and drinks for purchase at this free event.

Praise on the Green Gospel Extravaganza — 7 to 10 p.m.

Another free Reggae Month event, Praise on the Green will feature three gospel artists at City Hall lawn for a concert. Minister Marion Hall, Otis Kemp and Mark Brown and Choir will perform inspirational music meant for singing along.

Friday Follow @ The Rooftop With V — 7 to 8 p.m.

This free 60-minute yoga flow is offered by Threetwo Ave at the Epic Residences rooftop. Participants can park on the roof of the parking garage, bring a mat and join a minimal instruction, all-level class. Instructors also ask that you bring a face towel and water. This class is weather dependent.

Saturday

Yoga Saturdays hosted by Mayor Messam — 10 to 11 a.m.

Bring your mat to the Miramar Cultural Center Botanical Gardens for an all-levels yoga class. RSVP for free on Eventbrite to join the group that meets with an instructor, whether you want to learn new moves or practice what you know.

Sip and Paint for Kids: Celebrating Black History — 2 to 4 p.m.

This class for kids age 8 to 13 is $25, with all art supplies included. The Miramar Cultural Center is offering a sip and painting class for children, to explore themes around the pride, joy and heritage of Black History Month. Tickets are limited to two per order.

Montessori Family Fun Day at the Park — 12 to 3 p.m.

Join Protea Montessori school at Miramar Pineland Park for a family fun day centered on learning. Activities include arts and crafts, hands-on Montessori activities, field games, slime, and snacks and drinks. This event is free and open to all.

Chess Club at Miramar Library — 12 to 2 p.m.

The Miramar Chess Club plays during the week, but this weekend it will be at the Miramar Branch Library. These meetings will take place on the fourth Saturday of each month. This is a good chance to learn more about chess and play casual matches against other players, no matter your skill level. Register for free on Eventbrite.

Afro-Carib Festival — 5 to 11 p.m.

The fifth annual Afro-Carib Festival takes place at the Miramar Regional Park Amphitheater from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m., featuring Steel Pulse, Shuga, Naomi Cowan and Skinny Fabulous, plus more. General admission is free, and advance parking is $12. Enjoy cultural food, vendors, music and art all from the Caribbean. Register at AfroCaribFestMiramar.com.

All-Inclusive Love Jones Live R&B Dinner Show — 8 p.m. to 1 a.m.

This live show at Le’Grande Ballroom includes dinner and music. The party is hosted by Excitement Radio’s Shai Will, who promises a memorable night out with R&B hits playing all night. Special guests and live performers will appear. Register for $85 on Eventbrite.

Sunday

Color the World! The New Florida Follies — 2 to 5 p.m.

The New Florida Follies are a performing group ages 55 to 97 showcasing Broadway-style numbers. The costumes, singing and dancing are meant to dazzle, and the Miramar Cultural Center calls it a unique entertainment experience. Enjoy over 35 performers with tickets starting at $35.

Sunday Flow @ The Rooftop with Kiki — 5 to 6 p.m.

Another free 60-minute yoga class from Threetwo Ave offers moves accessible to all levels. Join Kiki at the Epic Residences parking garage, park up top and bring a mat. Instructors also recommend you bring a towel for underneath your mat and water.
