This week in Miramar: Cocktail hour, passport services, commission meeting & more
Miramar has a variety of events happening this week, including closing out Women’s History Month with a special event at the Miramar Cultural Center and walk-in passport renewal services at City Hall.
Organizations such as the Miramar Run Club and Miramar Chess Club have meetings this week, and elected city leaders will gather for the first of their two monthly meetings.
Here are some of the events happening around town from Monday, March 30, through Thursday, April 2:
Monday
Passport walk-in services — 9 a.m. to noon
Need to apply for or renew your passport? Prep your documents and fees before this walk-in event. The city clerk’s office will be at City Hall for two days (Monday and Tuesday) and applicants who sign in before noon will be seen. See the application and requirements on the city’s website.
Set the pace Mondays — 6:45 p.m.
The Miramar Run Club meets weekly at City Hall for an easy run for all levels. Even if you’re walking, you are welcome to join this free event. Join to help build consistency. The run starts at 7 p.m. and lasts 30 minutes. Sign up on RunAdic.
Tuesday
Breastfeeding class at Memorial Hospital Miramar — 6 p.m.
This free in-person breastfeeding class is run by a board-certified lactation consultant in the Mediterranean Palm Room on the first floor of the medical office building. Get professional tips on breastfeeding for mothers, partners and grandparents.
Balancing the scales: meet and greet dialogue — 6:30 to 8 p.m.
To close Women’s History Month, Vice Mayor Yvette Colbourne is hosting a dialogue that celebrates the city’s new art exhibit “Balancing the Scales.” The discussion will focus on the importance of women in art, as the exhibit features all women artists. Speakers include Laura Vivas, a singer-songwriter known for her performances on season 3 of “The Voice;” Nicole Cummings, a program manager for NASA; and Michelle Grant Murray, artistic director of the Olujimi Dance Theatre in Miami. The exhibit is in the Ansin Family Art Gallery and the event will be held in the Miramar Cultural Center banquet hall.
Zumba on the plaza — 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Town Center plaza turns into a party every Tuesday at this free Zumba class. Join instructor Gabriela Jurado and bring water for this all levels class that joins exercise with dance.
Weekly Live Trivia Nights at World of Beer — 7 p.m.
World of Beer has a new trivia night series. Register your team with the National Trivia League and compete for prizes. Live Trivia Nights at the location on Red Road are free to play, powered by Challenge Entertainment.
Wednesday
Miramar Chess Club — 7 to 10 p.m.
This club invites you to the Starbucks on Red Road for a night of strategy and fun. Bring your own chess set to this meetup and play no matter your level of experience.
Commission meeting — 7 p.m.
It’s the first Wednesday of the month, so a city commission meeting is scheduled. Attend in the commission chambers at City Hall or online at miramarfl.gov. These public meetings are a chance for the mayor and commission to pass resolutions or make proclamations and hear from the public on pertinent issues.
Thursday
Cocktails & Capital - Elevated Networking Mixer — 7 to 8:30 p.m.
TPN Community Miramar is meeting at Sushi Sake for a networking mixer featuring Hyacinth Henderson, co-CEO of The Henderson Financial Group. Admission is $5 to get financial advice, meet other business owners and learn more about TPN Miramar.
