Miramar has several opportunities to connect with the community and learn more about the city this week.

The city is forming its strategic plan and there will be a meeting where you can give input. Plus, another free food distribution is happening at the Alexandra P. Davis Multi-Service Complex.

Here are some events happening in Miramar from Monday, May 25, through Thursday, May 28:

Monday

Memorial Day ceremony — 11:30 a.m.

The City of Miramar will honor service members who died in service to the country this Memorial Day. The ceremony, remembering those who paid the “ultimate sacrifice,” is scheduled to take place at the Miramar Regional Park 9/11 & Veterans Memorial.

Tuesday

Miramar PROUD & Service Awards MEET Miramar Day Celebration! — 10 a.m. to noon

Miramar is celebrating employees and the city by meeting in the commission chambers at City Hall. Employees who have gone above and beyond will receive recognition, and the city will celebrate its 71st anniversary.

Rhythms & Rhymes Storytime! — 10:30 to 11 a.m.

Get ready for preschool with reading, games and activities made for children. Rhythms & Rhymes Storytime incorporates activities to help kids develop social and learning skills. Staff will be present to answer questions as you prepare for this transition.

Mat Pilates — 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Haus of Align is hosting a mat Pilates class at the Vernon E. Hargray Youth Enrichment Center. Pilates focuses on intentional movement through breathing to build strength. Tickets are $24.

Zumba on the Plaza — 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Every Tuesday, meet up with Gaby Zumba Fit for an energetic class that combines dance with fitness. Follow along with the moves outside at City Hall Plaza for free and make sure to bring water.

Weekly Live Trivia Nights at World of Beer — 7 p.m.

Gather your team and get ready to compete at this weekly trivia competition. Sign up online with Challenge Entertainment to register a team and be eligible to win prizes.

Wednesday

Autism-Friendly Training for Local Businesses — 10 to 11 a.m.

The city wants to train local businesses to interact with autistic customers and families. Made for business owners and employees, this training teaches practical strategies on how to make businesses more autism friendly. Workers can leave with a better understanding of autism and examples of simple adjustments they can make to better customer service. The training can be completed at the City Hall commission chambers or online.

Walk-Up Food Distribution — Noon to 2 p.m.

Wak up to the Alexandra P. Davis Multi-Service Complex to get free groceries if you are in need. Food will distributed until 2 p.m. or while supplies last. No registration is required, and it is recommended that you bring a cart and an umbrella.

Historic Miramar Advisory Board Meeting — 6:30 p.m.

Building, Planning and Zoning is hosting this advisory board meeting that focuses on much of eastern Miramar, known as Historic Miramar. The board makes recommendations to the commission about infrastructure improvements, future developments, welfare and more. The group meets on the last Wednesday of every month in the Alexandra P. Davis Multi-Service Complex conference room. Join to find out what’s happening in Historic Miramar and give your input.

Thursday

Line Dancing — 6 to 8 p.m.

Ever wanted to learn the moves to line dances? At this free class, instructor Jammin Jamei teaches dances to popular line dancing songs. The Vernon E. Hargray Youth Enrichment Center hosts the two-hour gathering.

Strategic Plan Meeting — 6 to 8 p.m.

The City of Miramar wants your help shaping its strategic plan. The strategic plan process includes meetings with residents where they can contribute to the city’s future. Enter a short survey while there and you could win an iPad, iPhone or gift card. The third and final meeting in this series will take place at City Hall.

Pilates In The Park — 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Join Haus of Align for another Pilates class, this time in Miramar Regional Park. Enjoy the outdoors while following the intentional movements of the instructor. Mat Pilates can help build strength while focusing on breath, improving control and alignment. Tickets are $24.

Zumba Thursdays — 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Free Zumba is available at the Sunset Lakes Community Center every Thursday with instructor Gabriela Jurado. Zumba is a dance fitness class that can help you work up a sweat through fun movements. Make sure to fill out the city’s release form before attending.
