This year’s State of the City address will mark Wayne M. Messam’s 10th year as the mayor of Miramar.

Leading up to the speech, set for 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 30, at the Miramar Park of Commerce, Messam has been highlighting the city’s growth during the past 10 years.

Instagram posts show that the Miramar Police Headquarters, the Miramar Regional Park Amphitheater and the Historic Miramar Public Safety Complex opened during Messam’s terms.

Messam became Miramar’s first Black mayor in 2015 and has been reelected twice since, most recently in 2023 for a four-year term.

This year’s theme is titled “Our Future Together.”

“I’ve been blessed to be the mayor of our amazing city for a decade now. Wow, how time flies. So many of our dreams back then have become accomplished,” the mayor said in a video posted on Facebook.

Residents have also seen a new focus on east Miramar, which the city now refers to as “Historic Miramar” with the Historic Miramar Advisory Board leading the conversation on changes in the area.

In his annual speech, Messam usually reflects on what the city has achieved over the past year, how the city is expanding its global influence, and its advancements in infrastructure, sustainability and community services.

He may also recap the success of his campaign to stop a large trash incinerator from being built near Miramar residents.

The closing remarks of last year’s speech focused on encouraging residents to join this fight, to advocate with him in front of the Miami-Dade County Commission against the incinerator.

Since then, the commission has taken the Opa-Locka West Airport location off the table.

For those who can’t make it to the event, the city usually posts the speech online after.
