Miramar’s effort to quiet performances at the Miramar Regional Park Amphitheater is finally moving forward.

City officials said initial funding for the project — $274,000 —- was allocated at the most recent commission meeting through a budget adjustment, clearing the way for planning to begin.

“The project is entering the planning phase now that funding is in place,” Sean Hennessy, department coordinator for utilities, told the Miramar News in an email.

Its total cost is unknown.

Complaints from surrounding neighborhoods began several years ago, prompting the city to begin considering a noise reduction project.

The hope is that upgrades will further bring the venue in line with modern performance standards and help the city protect and expand on a key revenue-generating asset.

Specific elements of the noise-mitigation will soon be on the table. Options may include system upgrades, structural changes or acoustic treatments, all of which could be evaluated in the coming design phase.

It’s hard to sound proof a circus tent-style venue, which is partially open air. The venue also features fixed, air-conditioned indoor restrooms and a 50,000-plus-square-foot promenade. Its stage, elevated five feet high and stretching 100 feet wide and 40 feet deep, was built to host large productions.

The venue, located at 16801 Miramar Parkway, recently hosted October’s Latin Music Festival. Up next is the Aviation Expo 2025, Dec. 5-6. The next large scale event scheduled at the amphitheaer will be the Afro-Carib Festival on Feb. 28.

The unique-looking amphitheater is one of Miramar’s marquee attractions. Opening in 2017 with a roughly $7.4 million price tag, the 90,000-square-foot facility has 3,000 covered seats beneath its nearly $2 million white canopy. There is room for 2,000 more spectators on the lawn.

The city’s noise reduction project was first introduced in the 2023 Annual Comprehensive Financial Report.

“The Amphitheater Noise Reduction CIP project includes the implementation of various site improvements at the amphitheater to reduce the sound penetrating into the neighboring homes,” the city wrote.

The audio improvement work will be financed through a Capital Improvement Project, which typically combines various local, state and federal funding sources.

Such upgrades typically involve targeted speaker systems that direct sound inward, sound-dampening structures and operational tweaks to keep events within local noise rules.
