A Miramar woman was charged with removing evidence from the scene of a fatal hit-and-run, an arrest report obtained by the Miramar News says.

Karen Essick, 66, admitted to Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies that she was in a crash with a pedestrian on Monday, March 23, in West Park, according to the report.

The pedestrian, Mishell Warner, was pronounced dead at Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood.

Cops believe Essick removed physical evidence from the site of the accident.

“Essick did so, knowing that a criminal investigation was about to be conducted,” the report reads.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office said it has video footage of Essick driving down Hallandale Beach Boulevard, returning to the scene of the crash at Barry Road, then fleeing. After finding her car at a body shop, detectives confronted Essick at her home.

Additionally, the report says she “knew or should have known” based on the circumstances and nature of the crash that the pedestrian was dead.

On Thursday, March 26, Essick was arrested for tampering with or fabricating physical evidence and failure to remain on scene in an accident involving death and taken to Broward County Main Jail.
