Spots open for Jamaica Hi-5K run in Miramar with reggae stars. Here are details
A run that highlights wellness and supports a charitable cause is returning to Miramar.
Happening in Atlanta, Orlando and Houston as well, the Jamaica Hi-5K is a run/walk that raises money for the Adopt-a-Clinic Initiative through the Jamaica High5 foundation.
The Miramar 5K is Saturday, May 9, at Miramar Regional Park. The race begins at 7 a.m. and is hosted by Mayor Wayne M. Messam and Consul General Oliver Mair.
Mair is responsible for representing Jamaica in the southern U.S.
According to the Hi-5K site, last year’s race saw 1,300 participants.
“It’s a phenomenal feeling to have so many persons working together for a big project called the Jamaica High5 5K walk/run,” Mair said in an Instagram video.
“We started this project four years ago … and all the proceeds go toward helping clinics in Jamaica. We’ve adopted five clinics.”
Several notable Jamaicans will make be there to show support for the Adopt-a-Clinic initiative as race ambassadors. Reggae artists Ky-Mani Marley and Spragga Benz and personal trainer Patrice J. White are scheduled to appear.
DJs will play reggae music along the course, and there will be a post-race celebration featuring awards, food and live performances from 10 a.m. to noon.
The price to participate is $40, and after Friday, May 8, it will increase to $45.
Each finisher will receive a medal and free refreshments such as Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee and cornmeal porridge.
“We continue to encourage more organizations to … give back to Jamaica … because you touch lives when you help with healthcare in rural communities,” Kamina Johnson Smith, minister of foreign affairs and foreign trade of Jamaica, said in the Instagram video.
“And even better to do it while taking care of your own health and wellness by walking, running, jogging, or getting from A to B one way or another during the Hi-5K.”
