What’s going on in Miramar this weekend? Your guide to events around the city
This weekend, Miramar has a wide variety of entertaining events and community gatherings .
Check out some of the shows at the Miramar Cultural Center, take an art class or meet a Caribbean celebrity.
Here are some events happening Oct. 17-19.
Friday
Sneakers on the Ground — 6-9 p.m.
Miramar Commissioner Avril Cherasard is hosting her Sneakers on the Ground series with instructor Jammin Jamei. This high-energy event features line dancing and a candlelight march, and is free for Miramar residents. No boots allowed on the gym floor at the Vernon E. Hargray Youth Enrichment Center. Future Sneakers on the Ground events are scheduled for Nov. 7 and Dec. 19.
Vibrations — 8-10 p.m.
Journey through Caribbean culture with Jamaica’s leading youth dance company, Campion Dance Society Ensemble. The group has performed across the world and is bringing its combination of Afrocentric and contemporary dance to the Miramar Cultural Center stage. Tickets start at $23.
Saturday
Free Tree Giveaway — 8 a.m.-noon
Broward County residents can get their hands on a free tree at Miramar Pineland Park, with four varieties to choose from. Gardeners of all levels are encouraged to come out with proof of residency to secure one tree per household, while supplies last.
Visual Art Classes for Kids
If your child is interested in learning more about art, classes at the Miramar Cultural Center start Saturday. The visual arts instruction is focused on drawing and painting for ages 7 to 11, and all necessary materials are provided. The four classes are on Saturdays — Oct. 18 and 25, Nov. 1 and 8. The cost of all four classes is $150.
Free first time home buyer event — 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
The Flamingo Realty Group has a free event for first time home buyers interested in learning more about the process. Presented by a title agent, real estate agent, mortgage consultant and credit repair specialist, this gathering will have free coffee and donuts and answers to any homebuying questions.
Taste of Jerk — 2-7 p.m.
Can’t wait for the Grace Jamaican Jerk Festival in November? Join this free kickoff event at VP Records featuring reggae star Christopher Martin. Food vendors, free food samples, a DJ and meet and greet with Martin will all be available.
Miramar Gun and Knife Show — Oct. 18-19
Florida Gun Expo is hosting a gun and knife show at the National National Guard Armory in Miramar. Admission is $11 for a two-day ticket, there’s free parking, and concealed weapons classes will be available.
Sunday
The Achieve Anyway Show — 4 p.m.
The Autism Theatre Project presents a show with actors, musicians, motivational speakers and acrobats of all abilities. All ticket proceeds go to the Autism Theatre Project, which is dedicated to empowering the disability community with paid work and producing inspirational shows such as “The Voice Inside” on South Florida PBS. Tickets start at $11.50.
