Carnival, circus, chess and Zumba: Here’s what’s happening this week in Miramar
It’s a busy week in Miramar with two huge events happening through the week and weekend: a circus show and a carnival.
Some events are back for the first time this year, including the Miramar Chess Club and two advisory board meetings with the city.
Here are some of the events happening in Miramar from Monday, Jan. 12, to Thursday, Jan. 15:
Monday
Paranormal Cirque — Through Jan. 19
A thrilling circus is taking over Miramar Regional Park with a show that’s R rated. Tickets for Paranormal Cirque by Cirque Italia start at $27 for this classic show with a twist. Dark themes and dangerous stunts await, including acrobatics, tightropes and contortionists. This show is meant for ages 17 and up.
St. Stephen Carnival — Through Jan. 18
A 10-day carnival has opened in Miramar around the corner from the St. Stephen Parish Catholic Church. All week there will be thrill rides, kid-friendly activities, games and music. Enjoy classic carnival food like funnel cake or ride a swinging pendulum. Ride tickets and raffle tickets are on sale at the fair grounds, at 2000 State Road 7.
Tuesday
Zumba on the Plaza — 6:30 p.m.
Have you taken advantage of this free weekly class yet? Zumba is happening outdoors at City Hall Plaza, presented by Mayor Wayne M. Messam. Join instructor Gabriela Jurado for a fun and upbeat dance fitness class.
Planning and Zoning Board Meeting — 6:30 p.m.
On every second Tuesday of the month, this advisory board meets to discuss land use in the city. Meetings are open to the public, and the committee advises the Miramar Commission on current zoning issues. Join in City Hall’s commission chambers or online at miramarevents.webex.com.
Wednesday
Miramar Chess Club — 7 to 10 p.m.
Every Wednesday night is an opportunity to sharpen your chess skills and make new friends. Head to the Starbucks on Red Road, and bring your own chess set. The Miramar Chess Club says all are welcome, regardless of skill level.
Thursday
Blasting Community Advisory Board Meeting — 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Miramar is the city with the most complaints about rock mining in nearby Miami-Dade. Its Blasting Community Advisory Board meets on the third Thursday of every month, but it can’t meet without members. The December meeting was canceled due to a lack of quorum, and the Miramar site lists five vacancies on the board. Attend at the Miramar Development Services Building, Engineering Meeting Room, 2nd Floor, 2200 Civic Center Place to share your thoughts.
